Notes from the Mayor...
2015 was a busy year for the city of Florence and 2016 looks to be even more so! Let’s look back at what 2015 was like and then look forward to what is ahead!
Probably the project that the majority of our people were happy to see completed was Williams Road. Work went on all summer, and the new road was open to the public the day before school started! Whew! It was close, but they made it and it makes traffic so much easier. Williams Road has a brand new surface! With Williams Road and our new Eagle Post Road, (East and West), traffic is flowing more smoothly than ever.
Just to list a few of our events over the last year will give everyone an idea of how busy our great little city has actually been. I hope all of you took advantage of getting out and about and attending many of them. Hemphill Park stayed busy with baseball, soccer, tennis, and football. We had opening day ceremonies for sports, state championship tournaments (many of which we won!), Mayor’s Youth Council Easter Egg Hunt, Splash Pad fun all summer, our annual Florence Day in November which honored our Veterans, Police Department’s National Night Out, and that is just a few!
Not long ago, we moved into our beautiful new Municipal Complex. It gives us much more room to move around and do our jobs. Where city hall used to be is now all the police department. The new part is the water department, planning and zoning and all administrative offices. Residents can now drive up to a window to pay their water bill or put it in a drop box which is available 24 hours a day.
We often have groups come to city meeting to be recognized, such as Boy Scout Troops or baseball and soccer teams. Also, on any given day we welcome classes to come and tour city hall. Someone is always available to take them on a tour. We are so proud of these children and teens and love the opportunity to meet them.
As you can see, 2015 was a great, whirlwind year! We are looking forward to 2016, and if you have any suggestions of changes or additions about what we do, please feel free to contact us. Here are a few things we are looking anticipating: Freedom Plaza will be fully opened soon. Already there is a Baskin Robbins and Any Time Fitness. The elevated water tank that is next to Marvin Methodist and First Baptist is in the process of being painted. This is a project that has been delayed for years, and is required by the Health Dept. Your city council is working hard to not only do things like road maintenance which make our lives easier, but also projects that are looking to the future of our city. Another project underway is expanding the waste water treatment plant to meet the needs of our growing city. These are things that I never gave a thought about until I became a member of the board, but they are necessary for the growth of Florence.
The expansion of Highway 49 has been a challenge for many of us, but this is something that comes with growth. When it is all done we will have three lanes going each way. Hopefully the water and other problems will be done soon. Try to remember that these companies are trying to work around lines that were placed many years ago when our city was first being built. There are no maps. Where there are maps, they are being used. Our water people are not digging the holes that are causing this, and they are working around the clock when necessary to keep the water on and safe. Please try to be patient! We all want the same thing: clean running water.
There are a few other great projects that are about to take off! Keep your eyes open around Berry’s Seafood and behind/beside the new Polk’s Drugs. Exciting things are going on in Florence, Mississippi!
