Getting to Know Me: I have been married to Suzanne Byrd Poynor for thirty-three years. We built our house in Florence 30 years ago and have been delighted to call Florence home. Suzanne is now retired after teaching 32 years in Rankin County. 25 of these years, she spent teaching second graders in Florence. Presently, Suzanne is an adjunct instructor for Hinds Community College. We have one grown son, Will. We are members of Florence First Baptist. I am currently President of the Florence Lions Club.
Education: Attended Hinds Community College
Work History: I have worked for Siemens for 38 years. My duties are to coordinate with marketing, engineering, quality, purchasing, manufacturing, and local vendors to insure that the company has the materials available to produce our products of over $100 million in sales each year.
Experience: I served Florence as Alderman for 4 terms (1989 – 1997, 2005 – Present) and was elected Mayor of Florence in 1997. In 2008, I completed courses with the Mississippi Municipal League to be a Certified Municipal Official. This year (2010), I completed the courses to receive the Masters Certification.
Key Issues Facing Florence: Florence is growing rapidly. We must maintain our infrastructure to support growth by relieving traffic congestion and meeting demands for water and sewer. I am happy to say that the Erlich Road Project is underway. New water wells, addition to our sewer treatment plant, and sewer pumping stations need to be added to meet this rapid growth. I will work for park facilities, relief of flooding problems, and safety for our citizens. I believe strongly in supporting economic development to bring new business to support the growth of Florence. Being a good steward of our tax dollars for Florence is a priority for me.
We must continue to enforce our zoning ordinances to maintain our quality of life. We must find ways to enhance the type of growth and business construction on Highway 49 to give a positive impression of our city for our citizens and the thousands of people who use it daily.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve you as Alderman.
